Family Help is a juvenile justice prevention program designed to assist families who have a child that is a runaway, truant, and/or ungovernable or at-risk of these behaviors. Services are aimed at preventing youth from entering the child welfare and/or the juvenile justice system by providing an array of services to strengthen the family. Services are available to families residing in Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, Sumter, Polk, Highlands, and Hardee Counties.
Family Help is part of a continuum of the statewide Child-in-Need-of-Services and Families-in-Need-of-Services (CINS/FINS) as defined in Florida Statutes, Chapter 984. Youth and families are eligible for program services if a child is threatening to run away, is beyond parental control, or is truant from school or at risk of these behaviors. The child cannot have a pending investigation into an allegation of abuse, neglect, or abandonment and/or be under dependency supervision by the Department of Children & Families, or delinquency supervision by the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Services may include screening and referrals, comprehensive child and family assessment, crisis intervention, individual and family counseling, both in-home and on an outpatient basis, comprehensive case management, case review staffing and family court intervention. The program has statutory authority through the case review staffing process to initiate judicial proceedings for youth who do not re-mediate truancy and ungovernable behavior.
Services are short-term, usually 13-16 weeks except for youth who have been adjudicated by the court as a Child-in-Need-of-Services (CINS). For these youth, program services are provided until the youth reach the age of 16.
Fees for services are based on a sliding scale. No family is denied services based on an inability to pay.
